Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, and so she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. She suffered from an anxiety disorder based on word associations as a young child. Ford started acting in her teens and became an actor in the National Youth Theatre. She was admitted to Sylvia Young Theatre School but after a week, she decided that she didn't fit in. Ford, instead of applying to Central School of Speech and Drama and winning a placement after her third try she applied for and was awarded acceptance to Central School of Speech and Drama. One of her classmates were Shaun Dingwall, who would be later reprise her role as Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford received her degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut when she appeared on Surgical Spirit in an episode in 1991. Ford took the professional title of Catherine Tate. Tate was featured in a variety of television programmes such as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning in the Nineties. The stage was her main focus and was a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company's season 2000-2001. Tate was recognized for her stand-up comedy and became part of her repertoire in the year 1996.
